Financial Aid and Scholarships
The Chemistry Department has a number of scholarships and awards that are presented to deserving students. The funded awards and scholarships provide us with the flexibility to meet unfulfilled financial need and to reward merit, independent of the financial aid office.
James Balafas Award in Organic Chemistry
Award to an outstanding student in organic chemistry. The award was established in memory of James Balafas, a former graduate student in the Deaprtment.
Cibrowski Family Foundation Scholarships
Awards $2,000 scholarships to 1 first year and 3 continuing students in Engineering/Chemistry. To be eligible for this scholarship, a student must be a high school senior or undergraduate college student and a US citizen, and must be enrolled at DU prior to the awarding of the scholarship. Minimum requirements for GPAs and SAT/ACT scores are available in the Dean's office. This award was established by Stan Cibrowski, a University of Denver alumnus. Application is made to the Dean of Natural Sciences, Math, and Engineering.
Essie White Cohn Award
Plaque and cash award to an outstanding junior or senior women chemistry or biochemistry majors. This award is in honor of Essie White Cohn, a former faculty member in Chemistry.
James Evans Memorial Fund Scholarship
Scholarships to outstanding junior or senior women chemistry or biochemistry majors. This award is in honor of James Evans, a faculty member at Colorado Women's College.
Reuben C. Gustavson Memorial Scholarship
Award to an outstanding freshman chemistry or biochemistry major. This award was endowed by friends of Dr. Gustavson, DU alumnus, former chair of the DU Chemistry Department, former president of the University of Colorado, and former chancellor of the University of Nebraska.
Lynn H. Miller Scholarship
Scholarships of variable amounts for outstanding chemistry and biochemistry majors. These scholarships are funded by the Miller family for Dr. Lynn Miller, a 1929 chemistry graduate of the University of Denver.
Michael Sherwood King Recognition Award
Award to the outstanding junior chemistry or biochemistry major. This fund was created in memory of Michael (Tyke) Sherwood King, a former DU student.
Dwight M. Smith Scholarship
Scholarships for entering freshman chemistry or biochemistry majors. This award is in honor of Dwight M. Smith, a former chair and chancellor of the university. The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry makes selections on the basis of academic merit and potential, with special consideration given to students needing financial assistance. The amount of the award is determined on an individual basis. Entering freshmen are automatically considered for these scholarships.
Chemical Rubber Company Freshman Chemistry Achievement Award
A "Handbook of Chemistry and Physics" awarded to the student who has achieved the most outstanding record in first year chemistry courses.
Department of Chemistry Outstanding Senior Chemistry or Biochemistry Major Award
Plaque.
Undergraduate Award in Analytical Chemistry
Award consists of a nine-month subscription to the journal, Analytical Chemistry, and an honorary membership in the Division of Analytical Chemistry for the same period.
Webster-Barnes Loans
Interest-free loans available for academic expenses. For information about these loans, contact the chairman of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. This fund was established by Dr. and Mrs. Broda O. Barnes to "aid worthy and needy chemistry students."
