Major in Chemistry
Bachelor of Arts Degree
This degree can be described as a liberal arts degree in chemistry. It stresses breadth with fewer required chemistry courses than the Bachelor of Science degree. As such, this degree is excellent preparation for high school science teachers. It can also be a very useful degree for individuals who are considering careers in interdisciplinary fields, for example, environmental law, marketing new technologies, etc.
A minimum of 40 quarter hours of chemistry is required for the Bachelor of Arts degree. One minor, which can be in many different areas, is required. One year of calculus and one year of physics are also required. The usual University Undergraduate Requirements (UREQs) in English, foreign language, CREX, AHUM, SOCS, and CORE (but not NATS or math) must be fulfilled.
Required Chemistry Courses
- General Chemistry and Lab, 4 Credits
- Organic Chemistry and Lab, 12 Credits
- Analysis of Equilibrium Systems and Lab, 4 Credits
- Chemistry of the Elements, 4 Credits
- Physical Chemistry, 3 Credits
- Chemistry Frontiers, 3 Credits
- Instrumental Analysis, 4 Credits
The student can choose from a variety of interesting upper division chemistry courses to complete the remaining 6 credits required for the B.A. degree. Courses available include Physical Chemistry II and III, Biochemistry, Biochemistry lab, and undergraduate research.
Bachelor of Science Degree
The Bachelor of Science degree has been designed for students who want to pursue a career in science. Among the many options for students who opt for this degree are graduate school in chemistry, medical, dental, or veterinary school, or working as a chemist in an industrial setting.
A minimum of 45 quarter hours of chemistry is required for the Bachelor of Science degree. Two minors are required with this degree. One of these must be in science, but the other can be in any discipline. One year of calculus and one year of physics are also required. The usual University Undergraduate Requirements (UREQs) in English, foreign language, CREX, AHUM, SOCS, and CORE (but not NATS or math) must be fulfilled.
Required Chemistry Courses
- General Chemistry and Lab, 4 Credits
- Organic Chemistry and Lab, 12 Credits
- Analysis of Equilibrium Systems and Lab, 4 Credits
- Chemistry of the Elements, 4 Credits
- Physical Chemistry I, II, and III, 9 Credits
- Chemistry Frontiers, 3 Credits
- Instrumental Analysis, 4 Credits
- Undergraduate Research, 2 Credits
The student can choose from a variety of interesting upper division chemistry courses to complete the remaining 3 quarter hours required for the B.S. degree. Courses available include Biochemistry, Biochemistry lab, additional Undergraduate Research, and advanced courses in other areas of chemistry.
