Major in Biochemistry
Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry
This degree has been designed for students who want to pursue a career in biochemistry. Among the many options for students who opt for this degree are graduate school in biochemistry, medical, dental, or veterinary school, or working in the field of biotechnology.
A minimum of 46 quarter hours of chemistry courses and 26 quarter hours of biology courses is required for the Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry. Two minors are required with this degree. The required biology courses complete a biology minor. The other minor can be completed in any discipline. One year of calculus and one year of physics are also required. The usual University Undergraduate Requirements (UREQs) in English, foreign language, CREX, AHUM, SOCS, and CORE (but not NATS or math) must be fulfilled.
Required Chemistry Courses
- General Chemistry and Lab, 4 Credits
- Organic Chemistry and La,b 12 Credits
- Analysis of Equilibrium Systems and Lab, 4 Credits
- Chemistry of the Elements, 4 Credits
- Physical Chemistry I, 3 Credits
- Chemistry Frontiers, 3 Credits
- Instrumental Analysis, 4 Credits
- Biochemistry I, II, III, 9 Credits
- Biochemistry Lab (or research), 3 Credits
Biochemistry majors are encouraged to take both Biochemistry Lab and Undergraduate Research, even if this brings their total chemistry credits over 46.
Required Biology Courses
- Concepts in Biology and Lab, 12 Credits
- Cell Structure and Function, 5 Credits
- General Genetics, 5 Credits
- Molecular Biology Lab, 4 Credits
The student can choose from a variety of interesting upper division chemistry courses to complete the remaining 3 quarter hours required for the B.S. degree. Courses available include Biochemistry, Biochemistry lab, additional Undergraduate Research, and advanced courses in other areas of chemistry.
